Walk-in Crisis Café

As well as offering a welcome cuppa, the Crisis Cafe is a safe, supportive and therapeutic place for anyone struggling and not coping with life. It means people do not have to be alone, struggling with upsetting thoughts or worry. The Café is at 15a Homerton Row next to the Homerton University Hospital site and is open from 6.00pm-9.00pm Monday to Thursday, and from midday to 4.00pm on Saturdays.

Service User Network (SUN)

The Service User Network is for people who experience emotional and psychological distress, frequent mood changes, emotional instability, self-harm and/ or have thoughts of suicide. It is a supportive and therapeutic group for individuals to develop self-help management strategies to prevent future crisis. See the SUN Poster here

Quit smoking

Tobacco was introduced into Europe in the late 15th century, and people have been smoking it recreationally ever since. It wasn't until the early 20th century that the harmful effects of smoking came to light, and studies continue to expose just how dangerous the habit can be to our health. Today smoking is considered to be the greatest single cause of premature death in the UK.

Despite the abundance of evidence highlighting the health risks of smoking, many people find the habit incredibly hard to break. Often people start smoking out of curiosity, due to peer pressure or simply out of boredom. Having family members who smoke can also increase a person's chances of picking up the habit. Before long, an addiction can form and this can overwhelm people physically and emotionally.

Quitting this kind of addiction often takes more than willpower alone to accomplish. For many, hypnotherapy for smoking is an effective means of breaking the habit for good. Medication and additional treatments can also help. 

Researching the effects of smoking, learning what you'll gain from quitting and discovering all the different ways to quit is an important first step to breaking the habit.

New toolkit helps make the link between improving cold homes and health outcomes

PHE has worked closely with the Department of Energy and Climate Change and the Centre for Sustainable Energy to help develop the Affordable Warmth and Health Evaluation Toolkit, which was launched last week.

The direct and indirect impacts of cold homes on health is well recognised in policy and research, such as the Cold Weather Plan for England and the NICE guidelines on Excess winter deaths and illness and the health risks associated with cold homes. Locally delivered schemes to tackle the problems of fuel poverty and cold homes are important in enabling households to achieve health and wellbeing benefits.

The new evaluation toolkit aims to help local organisations who manage affordable warmth schemes, and their partners, to understand the effects of their scheme on health and wellbeing and therefore build better relationships with the health sector. Identifying the link between an affordable warmth scheme’s interventions and health and wellbeing improvements can also contribute towards helping local authorities fulfil their Public Health responsibilities.
